Funding Cuts Put Rohingya Lives at Risk, Guterres Warns
Cox’s Bazar, March 14, 2025 – UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that drastic funding cuts for Rohingya refugees could lead to an “unmitigated disaster,” urging the international community to take immediate action.
Speaking at Camp 20 Extension in Ukhiya, Guterres emphasized the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding due to budget reductions. “We are facing the dramatic risk of having only 40% of the resources available in 2025 compared to 2024. That would be catastrophic,” he said.
Guterres, accompanied by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, was warmly welcomed by Rohingya refugees upon arrival. Later, they joined a ‘Ramadan Solidarity Iftar’ with one lakh Rohingya refugees.
The UN chief stressed that the international community must step up, as humanitarian aid remains the refugees’ only lifeline. With limited resources, food shortages, lack of healthcare, and rising security concerns are worsening conditions in the camps.
“The solution lies in Myanmar,” Guterres stated, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to ensuring the Rohingya can return home safely and voluntarily. Until then, he urged global solidarity with both the refugees and Bangladesh, which has shown immense generosity despite its own challenges.
As the world marks International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Guterres reminded everyone that Rohingya refugees are simply seeking dignity and safety. “They want to go home,” he said, stressing that the world must not forget their struggle.
